Heritage Renovation

This Georgie Award-winning Renovation/Addition to a classic 1912 Kitsilano neighbourhood home was designed by adding authentic period detailing stunning natural west coast fir. The original small kitchen was enlarged and opens up to the back garden with an array of windows and skylights above. We chose reproduction Tiffany light fixtures from the early 1900s, went with period paint colours and designed the millwork to fit with the house style. Beautiful shaker style doors, casing and millwork give the spaces a warm comfortable feel. Accent hardware is black and simple in design. Clean classic appliances are one of the few areas of concession to modern convenience. The finished product looks like a heritage interior from the original house but in actuality all the interior details are new construction as previous owners had removed all the original interior detailing. Many of the elements which people will identify as Arts and Crafts of that period were in fact created – these include drop cased beams, shoulder walls, short tapered columns, casing, wainscoting pattern, picture and plate rails – are all new. The exterior of the house was in a relatively good state of repair although much of the original siding material had been covered over with more modern materials such as asbestos siding from the 1950’s. This was removed, cedar shingles replaced and the house repainted to a historic paint colour. New Truly divided wood windows, period casing details and some tasteful stone work completed the outside look of the home. New stairs and decks at the back of the house created a more seamless flow from the kitchen to the garden behind.   Project Status : Completed Location : Vancouver, BC
