Anmore Woods Development

This project is a series of 4 luxury homes arranged together along a curve of the road in the hills of Anmore. Designed in a “Mountain Contemporary” style – the houses are structurally expressive, robust and visually playful. The houses were designed to retain as much of the exposed granite bedrock as possible; the rooms that face the rock capture some beautiful soft lighting and tranquil moments. The presence of the houses close to the rock face had a cooling restorative effect on the flora -native plants that had been exposed to the hot sun now thrived again and mosses re-emerged on the moist rock face. Each house is positioned to take in forest views but are arranged in a way that each home offers privacy to the next – this was achieved by twisting and stepping the volumes to avoid oversight. The homes are done in a similar palette of materials and colours so they have the collective artistic appearance but each one is strikingly unique. These strong differences are the result of the specifics of each site and the differing architectural programme. (One house is designed with a pool slicing through the centre of the plan to become a feature of both exercise and contemplation). The style of the houses was created to respond to the specific nature of the hill sloping lots in Anmore. The architectural vocabulary was based on stacked volumes rather than a singular monolithic mass, with low swooping rooflines, glass railed decks and carefully positioned windows and doors, connecting the interior to the landscape. The shape and position of windows was chosen to selectively crop and edit views as you move through the house. Bright, light-filled spaces, clean open kitchens and dramatic feature stairs that punch through the levels are signatures of this architectural vocabulary. Stacked ledgestone walls echo the grain and tone of the natural rock of the site.
